The
biggest privilege of counseling others is helping
people grow into their real and true identity, not
what society or others say they should be. My
primary goal as a therapist is to help you
improve your life by making big and small changes.
I do this by clarifying what's hindering you most,
helping you grow in self-awareness, and freeing you
to create the kind of life and relationships you want. I'll
help guide the therapy process, but the changes are
ultimately your responsibility. I
work exclusively with women, helping them increase
self-awareness and self-esteem, improve relationships
with family and others, make life-giving choices,
and treat issues such as anxiety and depression.
My
therapy style is in-depth, psychodynamic psychotherapy
emphasizing
Object
Relations,
Cognitive Behavioral, and Family Systems
theories.
Counseling refers to professional guidance that
resolves personal conflicts, emotional problems, and
everyday life issues. Therapy or psychotherapy means the treatment of psychological
issues of a deeper nature. The therapeutic
style and treatment plan we develop together
will be specific to your situation.
Counseling
treatment has been proven to be effective, but it
is not a quick fix solution. In fact, most clients
find that initial sessions resolve the most pressing
concern, only to uncover deeper issues they were less
aware of or unconsciously not dealing with. The
counselor-client relationship is generally representative
of other relationships in your life. As such,
I believe one's experiences in their family of origin
deeply affect who they are. It's through growing
in awareness of this that you can make sense of your
thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and be freed to
choose who you want to become.
While
the majority of my practice is direct-pay, I realize
many have health insurance that covers mental health
needs. If this interests you, please contact
your HMO or PPO provider first and ask about their
reimbursement percentage for an out-of-network provider
and the number of visits they will cover.
All
therapy is done in private individual sessions, 45-50
minutes, once per week, on available weekday afternoons
or evenings. I have worked successfully with
clients who see me for three to ten sessions,
as well as those who are interested in long-term work.
The duration depends solely on your goals and
issues.
Please
call to ask about current availability (this varies
weekly) or email me directly.
What
some of my clients have said
"Individual
therapy has benefitted me greatly by helping me learn
how to internalize a more nurturing inner voice rather
than a critical one. My depression has decreased a
great deal and I feel more able to handle stressful
situations in my life." - Female (age 28)
"Maria
listens with empathy and guides me to a place
of hope and peace within myself. My anger
has dissipated as I have dealt with the underlying
feelings and I have gained tools to manage my
anger so it doesn't have a negative impact on
my marriage." - Female (age 42)
I
was referred to Maria by my OB/GYN after being
diagnosed with post-partum depression. Maria's
guidance and direction have helped me navigate
my fears, shame and sadness that have hindered
my ability to parent my newborn. I now have
the confidence and peace to be the kind of mother
I have always wanted to be. - Female (age 34)
I look
forward to meeting you.
